The eastern coast of Spain hides many charming places, but one of them stands out particularly – Platja de Gandia. Located in the province of Valencia, in the Safor region, this sandy beach attracts not only Spaniards but also an increasing number of tourists from around the world. Although less frequently mentioned than the famous Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, Platja de Gandia is in no way inferior to it and, in many aspects, even surpasses the Brazilian icon.

Dimensions and infrastructure – more than just sand

Platja de Gandia stretches over 7 kilometers long, with a width of up to 80 meters, providing an impressive area of about 560,000 square meters. It is not just a place for sunbathing – the beach has been designed with the comfort and diverse needs of tourists in mind. There are numerous thematic zones: sports, recreational, family, and relaxation areas. Volleyball courts, outdoor gyms, bike paths, a palm-lined promenade, and numerous beach bars all contribute to a modern, well-organized space.

Copacabana vs. Gandia – two worlds of beach culture

When comparing Gandia to Copacabana, the cultural and functional differences are clear. Copacabana, while equally beautiful, is crowded, noisy, and more chaotic – a place where the streets pulse with samba, and evenings often turn into urban fiestas. This beach stretches for 4 km and lies in the heart of the Rio metropolis, which translates into higher pollution levels and greater risks of petty crime.

Gandia, on the other hand, offers a cleaner environment, a calmer atmosphere, and greater safety. It is an ideal destination for family vacations or romantic getaways. Additionally, Gandia has received prestigious quality awards, such as the Blue Flag, ISO 14001 certifications, and EMAS, confirming its ecological responsibility and high service standards.

History and tourism development

The area of present-day Gandia was inhabited as early as Roman times, but the real development of the city occurred during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when the region was governed by the Borgia family – one of the most influential in the history of Spain and the Vatican. Their residence, the Palace of the Borgias, is located in the city center and is a must-see for history enthusiasts.

The development of the beach as a tourist center began in the 1960s with the boom of mass tourism in Spain. Since then, the city has invested significant resources in infrastructure, hotels, transportation, and attractions for visitors. Currently, Gandia has over 11,000 accommodation places and several campsites, with the number of visitors exceeding 2.3 million annually, of which 60% are domestic tourists and 40% mainly from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Curiosities and hidden treasures

  • Sunsets in Gandia are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean – especially visible from the pier near the fishing port.

  • In the vicinity of the beach lies Marjal de Gandia – a protected natural area with unique fauna and flora, perfect for walking and birdwatching enthusiasts.

  • Local festivals, such as Fallas (in March) or Feria de Julio, provide an opportunity to learn about regional traditions, cuisine, and crafts.

  • At night, the promenade transforms into an entertainment center – with live music, fairs, ice cream parlors, and lively pubs.

Practical tips for tourists

  • Best time to visit: off-season (September to June) – fewer people, milder climate, and lower prices.

  • Transport: from Valencia, you can reach Gandia by Cercanías train (line C-1) in just over an hour; regular buses connect the beach with the city center.

  • Safety: the beach is monitored by lifeguards, and during the season, medical and information points operate.

  • Food: it's worth trying local specialties such as fideuà (pasta with seafood), horchata (a drink made from tiger nuts), and fresh seafood from the morning catch.

Summary – Gandia, a place worth a chance

Platja de Gandia is much more than just a sunbathing spot. It is a combination of nature, history, culture, and modernity in one stunning space. Although it is less media-covered than Copacabana, it offers tourists unique experiences in a safe and friendly environment. With excellent infrastructure, numerous attractions, and a rich culinary offering, Gandia is becoming an increasingly prominent point on the European tourist map.
